Within the World of Ministry: Ananias House Volunteer David Roth Shares How God Called Him to Serve

April 21, 2023

In honor of 2023’s National Volunteer Week, we sat down with Ananias House volunteer and Chairman Executive of the Board David Roth to learn more about his crucial involvement in our ministry to the Middle East and North Africa. Read on for David’s experience of volunteering with Ananias House.

How did you first get involved with Ananias House?

Most people, when they think of volunteer missionary work, don’t default to tax returns. There isn’t anything particularly attractive about tax returns or reconciling bank work, but they are important for the success of a ministry. It’s my God-given skillset. So, most of my activity, work, and efforts relate to administrative tasks. But I also deeply enjoy and have a wonderful time traveling to the Middle East. I am honored that I can help out in this way and hope to use it to the best of my ability. I’ve enjoyed my time here more than I can say.

Did you have a personal connection with the MENA region?

A “God connection” occurred a few years prior, when I was part of another ministry doing work in Türkiye. While there, I met someone who was looking for a job. At that time, John was looking to expand the ministry into Türkiye, and, as a result, we hired a dear sister to serve alongside AH.

Could you tell us more about one of your trips?

Last summer, John wasn’t able to go on a trip and needed a stand-in. So, I went to Egypt for the Women’s Leadership Training. My daughter, Lauren, had the opportunity to travel with us (she was interning at AH at the time). She made a meaningful connection overseas on that trip, and I came away realizing that no matter where we are, we are the same kinds of Christians, just in different circumstances.

What is your favorite aspect of Ananias House?

I love interacting with our overseas team. I genuinely believe that Ananias House is blessed by the people it has in the field. They are outstanding folks who are inspiring to see and interact with.

How has your time with AH impacted your life personally?

The way God works — this is what stands out to me more than anything. When the recent earthquake happened in Türkiye, our strong on-the-ground relationships allowed us to provide relief quickly and effectively. I have been to the places impacted by the earthquake and remember buildings standing tall that are now layers of rubble. Seeing these places in person adds context to any forthcoming news of devastation we see and hear.

What would you say to anyone considering partnering with AH as a volunteer?

Find the intersection between your talents and the ministry’s needs. Try not to go in with preconceived notions. There is a place for everybody within the world of ministry.
